Patient visit by robot is the rule on the gynecological ward of a Berlin clinic since August. Although this is not a substitute for the doctor's talk, it's still an asset.

BERLIN. The robot comes to the visit. What sounds like the music of the future is the rule at the gynecological ward in the Auguste-Viktoria-Klinikum (AVK) of the municipal hospital giant Vivantes in Berlin after a test run since August.

The so-called "Double Robot" consists of two electrically operated wheels with a height-adjustable rod to which a tablet is attached and thus resembles a Segway. Clinicians can also remotely control him or her from a mobile phone, dial in to the tablet and communicate via teleconference with patients and with the hospital team.

"The 'Double' allows much more flexible work," says the chief physician of the gynecological clinic in the Auguste-Viktoria-Klinikum, PD Dr. med. Mandy Mangler.

"Whenever I want to inquire about an operation, as a patient is, but no visit is planned, I switch at any time and regardless of location. I can roll autonomously across hallways and into rooms and only need someone to open the doors when needed. "

Digital pioneer role

According to the company, the robot does not replace a doctor's talk, but complements the possibilities of exchange. It is part of Vivantes' group-wide digitization strategy. He came to gynecology at the Auguste-Viktoria-Klinikum in an internal competition. The station is now going to digitize all the clinic processes in the course of 18 months in this competition.

The maternity clinics of Vivantes are considered pioneers in the field of digital patient records. The digital patient record, which is also available to resident physicians, has been running there for a year as a joint project of AOK, Sana and Vivantes.

Many other digitization projects are currently running parallel at the largest municipal hospital group in Germany. These include new telemedical procedures ("Vivantes Connect") and an electronic patient data management system (PDMS).

It will first be introduced to intensive care units. It is already in use at four Vivantes locations, with the other five locations to follow by the end of 2020.

Participation in Model Phase

Vivantes also digitizes the pathology. Tissue sections are available digitally for case reviews and tumor conferences. Since the beginning of August, the municipal hospital giant has been involved in a model phase with the rehab app "Caspar", which will test digital teleservicing by the end of 2021.

Online appointment bookings, video briefing sessions and even video glasses for patients to distract from surgery are further elements of Vivantes' extensive digitization strategy.
